JAGUAR COFFEE
Jaguar Coffee is synonymous with conservation and is an initiative that Amor Perfecto seeks to boost. It was founded through a community effort that protects the feline's corridor and, in turn, promotes economic income for around 200 families. The Serranía de San Lucas, between the departments of Antioquia and Bolívar, is the heart of the jaguar corridor, a fundamental point that connects all the transit of this animal in our country. This initiative is a tool for the empowerment of communities, helping them recognize the potential of their territory and turning them into the main promoters of the protection of both the jaguar and other species in this magical place.
This coffee is produced on the edge of what will be a protected area where the jaguar lives, and it is located between 1,000 and 1,550 meters above sea level. Each harvest produces approximately 500 tons of high-quality parchment coffee. Good practices in coffee plantations and constant forest monitoring have given this region the endorsement of WebConserva, a non-profit foundation focused on environmental education and research projects that promotes the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems. This coffee is grown in an optimal climate, with a logic of sustainability and conservation that seeks to use the least amount of herbicides; through a permanent community effort, the plantation coexists harmoniously with wildlife and especially with the jaguars that roam the surrounding forest.
The history of the people who inhabit this territory is defined by resilience. A few years ago, the mountains around the Serranía were planted with coca; decades of armed conflict contributed to the deterioration of the forests and their replacement by extensive crops. With the intention of improving their income and encouraging other types of crops, the communities of the beautiful Serranía de San Lucas decided to grow coffee.
The jaguar is a flagship species with a high symbolic value for the peoples of Latin America. Currently, this animal is considered a vulnerable species as it is threatened by illegal hunting and deforestation. Initiatives like Jaguar Coffee are fundamental for the protection of this feline, which in turn helps in the conservation of large amounts of ecosystems throughout the continent.
Jaguar Coffee is the result of a community effort that seeks to support those who grow it through its sale, while simultaneously protecting and conserving the Jaguar Corridor. The Serranía de San Lucas is the only place that guarantees the connectivity of the corridor in Colombia; it is its heart in our country, which is why its conservation is vital to preserve the flora and fauna of this territory.
