Walter Acevedo

Walter Acevedo

A single encounter is enough to change one's luck. Walter Acevedo knows this, and that is why his life has been full of coincidences. He was born in the city of Medellín and had contact with coffee from an early age.

“I learned about the universe of coffee through my family as a child; I knew of the sacrifice and all the effort required to produce the best coffee in the world, all without ever imagining that in the future I would become part of this universe.”

Walter is a man of great challenges; he has learned to perceive the world with enthusiasm, but with the prudence to wait for the right moment. He began by working as a security guard in a casino. His mother wanted him to be a police officer, but he decided to study at SENA and found a job in a shop serving coffee. It was there that he learned how to operate an espresso machine. In that moment, he discovered a new passion: barismo. With his characteristic curiosity, Walter decided to research and train in this practice autodidactically.

In 2013, Walter became a member of the Amor Perfecto team. By that time, barismo had become very popular, and he decided to explore the world of coffee cupping and roasting. After a long training process and much practice, in 2018 he took third place in the World Cup Tasters Championship held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This event made him the first Colombian to reach the final of said competition.

The process to reach this position was not easy. The competition consists of identifying, among 3 cups, the one with different characteristics. This is known as a triangulation; the objective is to complete and correctly identify 8 in the shortest time possible. A preliminary step for the world championship is to be the national champion in a competition organized by the National Federation of Coffee Growers and approved by World Coffee Events. After trying several times, Walter obtained the national title in 2018, which gave him the pass to the international competition.

Walter thrives in a space of exploration, whether roasting or cupping coffee; he resists stillness. Today, he is our company’s head roaster and is a fundamental element in our cupping sessions. Every coffee that arrives at Amor Perfecto meets Walter and his ability to make it stand out.
